Artist Series: Jadyn Flavell – In celebration of Matariki
We're celebrating Matariki this year by partnering with local Māori artist Jadyn Flavell for an exclusive Matariki tote bag giveaway and a window installation at our Karangahape Road Store in Auckland, New Zealand, starting 27th June.
What is Matariki?
Matariki is the celebration of the beginning of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar. Matariki originates from the Pleiades star cluster, appearing in the sky every winter, signaling the beginning of the Māori New Year which is celebrated and observed in New Zealand and some South Pacific countries.

About the Installation
Kotahitanga a Matariki (Unity of Matariki)
For this installation, Jadyn has created a visionary representation of the Matariki star cluster.
Our store located on the corner of Karangahape Road and Pitt Street will display Kotahitanga a Matariki, keeping its many eyes watching closely over the people moving through Karangahape Road during the Matariki celebrations.
The design will be printed onto our 1001 - Carrie Tote for a limited edition giveaway at our Karangahape Road store. This exclusive release will be given as a gift with any purchase of ‘The Deal’ starting June 27th, while stocks last.
How the installation expresses the event theme of 'Looking to the future’ (Matariki Tiro Whakamua)
This artwork draws from the concept of 'Looking to the future’ (Matariki Tiro Whakamua). When we gaze at the stars, we are peering into the past, while these same stars reflect upon us from the future. Acknowledging this irony allows us to see that the past, present, and future are one and the same. The future is merely a concept; there is only the present moment, an eternal now.
In memory of Koro George Flavell.
Our installation is a part of the Matariki celebrations on Karangahape Road,Te Karanga a Hape, with a contribution from Karangahape Business Association.
Celebrate Matariki with us, see the installation and grab a Matariki tote in-store. Mānawatia a Matariki!
